Cornell University bought land on Roosevelt Island in New York City to build the Cornell Tech campus. This campus is host to the “first high-rise residential building in the world built to Passive House standards.” According to Cornell Tech, “Passive House (PH) is the strict international building standard that drastically reduces energy consumption while creating a healthier and more comfortable living environment for a fraction of residents’ usual energy costs.” This building is not only host to a prefabricated metal panel system, but the building increases air quality and will use less energy. “Compared to conventional construction, the building is projected to save 882 tons of CO2 per year, equal to planting 5,300 new trees.” This building can serve as a model around the world that residential buildings of this magnitude can be extremely sustainable and in the end be more cost effective because the building will be spending 60-70% less energy.
